Project Description

This collaborative study takes the perspective of the recipients of vaccine services to understand the specific processes and experiences of different families in urban and rural areas (families of rural children left behind, families of rural children not left behind, families of urban local children, and families of urban migrant children) in the vaccination process and their issues, to explore the possible influencing factors of the issues, and to provide countermeasures and suggestions for improving the vaccination process for different families and reducing the burden on families.

Research Area

China

Project Goal

  1. To map out the vaccination process and experience of children from different families (families of rural children left behind, families of rural children not left behind, families of urban local children, families of urban migrant children) for routine vaccination and to analyze the roles played by different family members in the vaccination process: e.g., who among family members pays attention to vaccination information, who decides whether to vaccinate or not or the type of vaccination, and who accompany the children to the vaccination.
  2. Analyze the barriers of different families in the vaccination process: for example, the vaccination rate or the timely vaccination rate of rural left-behind -children needs to be higher due to the obstacles in accessing vaccination information. It also assesses the household burden as well as the burden on different family members.
  3. To explore the factors influencing the vaccination process in different types of families:1) the family-perspective factors such as gender, education, occupation, income, and knowledge of vaccines of the main decision-makers and guardians from the family; 2) the public health perspective factors such as vaccine knowledge, vaccine service provision, and vaccination notification and service from the public health perspective. The information will be applied to analyze the barriers in the vaccination process and the causes of family burden among different types of families.
  4. To propose suggestions and recommendations to reduce family burdens and improve the vaccination process for different types of families based on the above analysis of barriers and influencing factors in the vaccination process.

Progress

1) Systematically reviewed the evidence related to the immunization rate and influencing factors for left-behind and migrant children in China;

2) Completed qualitative data collection about the immunization process and experiences and quantitative data on the immunization knowledge, willingness, experience, and cost for immunization families in the fieldwork sites in Henan and Zhejiang Province;

3) Compiled and analyzed relevant data to provide recommendations and strategies for improving the immunization experience and reducing the financial burden on families;

4) Published the study results in the special Infectious Diseases of Poverty issue.
